Despite having a history nearly as long as man's, there are great political, economic and social challenges in Ethiopia--where the odds are stacked against children:
- Ethiopian women have on average 5.9 children
- Children represent 46% of the total population of 70 million
- 1 in 10 children die before their first birthday
- There are 4.6 million orphans, more than 720,000 orphaned by AIDS
- 47% of children at age five are severely malnourished
- 60% of children have stunted growth because of malnutrition
- 50% of the children will never attend school
- The doctor to child ratio is 1:24,000
- More than half the population has no access to medical care
- Less than 25% of the population has access to clean water
