The Situation in Ethiopia

Despite having a history nearly as long as man's, there are great political, economic and social challenges in Ethiopia--where the odds are stacked against children:
  • Ethiopian women have on average 5.9 children
  • Children represent 46% of the total population of 70 million
  • 1 in 10 children die before their first birthday
  • There are 4.6 million orphans, more than 720,000 orphaned by AIDS
  • 47% of children at age five are severely malnourished
  • 60% of children have stunted growth because of malnutrition
  • 50% of the children will never attend school
  • The doctor to child ratio is 1:24,000
  • More than half the population has no access to medical care
  • Less than 25% of the population has access to clean water
